Cinque Terre: 5 Villages

The Italian Riviera

We are still on our 5-week junket of Europe and this backstory leads us to the Italian Riviera. This rocky section of the Italian coast is dotted with colored houses in 5 separate and distinct villages on the Ligurian Sea. We explored all of them. (well except for one)

February 2019

It is that kind of place your Mother-In-Law has a puzzle of. Yes, she really does!

It is home to Pesto Sauce. Yummy, yummy, yummy. Now we are talking.

We stayed in a local inn on top a modest hill, but very convent as a home base to see all (almost all) of the 5 villages.

We tracked around and did some local hiking. The scenery is pretty much stunning no matter where you were at.

The Villages at a Glance:

Riomaggiore- the first village stop off of the train. You are chugging along, watching the rolling green hills and beautiful countryside, and poof......you enter a tunnel and on the other side, you are along shimmering blue waters against the rocky coast. It was something we had never seen before.

Manarola-the smallest of the villages (given, they are all very small) We really only did a quick walk about before we jumped to the next village of Cornelia.

Yes, Italian white wine in a plastic cup.

Corniglia-There is only a single road in town, but the main event is a hike up the huge stairway that runs up and down and is laced with vineyards and farmhouses. Lots, and lots of steps on this walk.

Monterosso- Busiest of the villages because it has a proper beach and a seafront promenade. It is has the most accommodations.

Vernazza-is where we watched the sunset and stayed. It was a very, very tiny village with no hotels, just guest stays which was lovely.

The main event right here........I think it says it all. Thanks, Italy, we will for sure return to explore more of your enchanting villages.
